Cöffeemeister

Coffee has been flirting with the booze-world, of late. Yesterday, I saw a TV commercial for a nitro-cold brew from a prominent coffee company. This means that unlike soda and traditional beer, nitro beverages receive the same bubble-treatment as Guinness.

Next up in this trend, Jägermeister just announced that it has a cold brew variation of its traditional liqueur. Each shot will boast 10% of the caffeine in a cup of coffee, and they add cacao for a dry & earthy chocolate-y-ness.

Here’s Why Vanilla Smells So Good

Vanilla commonly comes from Hawaii, Mexico, Tahiti, Madagascar, & Indonesia; and just like with coffee each of these locations produces a bean with a slightly different taste & aroma.

Now, let’s get just a little science-y, just for a moment. A Volatile Organic Compound is an aggressive-sounding name for simply a naturally occurring chemical that evaporates easily. Often, this means that we actually notice them as scents/aromas.

Vanilla has been found to contain more than 100 different volatile organic compounds. Perhaps this incredibly complex blend of aromas explains its widespread appeal to humans.

Booze + Coffee= 90

Some of the good folks over at the University of California, Irvine like to study old people and what has helped them to live past 90. In a study that began with 14,000 retirees they examined the lifestyles of 1,600 really old people.

Among their findings they found that 1 serving of alcohol and 1 serving of coffee daily contributes to a longer life. They also found that people who are overweight when in their 70s live longer than skinny 70 year olds.

It Takes 7 Years to Make Kahlúa

Have you ever jazzed up your coffee with a little Kahlúa? If not, the coffee-infused rum liqueur compliments a cup of joe quite nicely!

Unlike many spirit manufacturers, the makers of Kahlúa are quite revealing about their process. First, they age a whole bunch of rum for 7 years! Next, they add Coffee-extract, Vanilla, and Caramel.

No joke, that sounds perfect right now, so I’m actually off for a Kahlúa & coffee, too!

Plants Can Do More Than Make Booze

Sometimes we get so caught up in one specific function of a plant that we forget what else it does. If you like adding Sugar and/or Rum to your coffee, then the sugar cane is a miracle plant!

However, if you refrain from turning the sugar cane into booze, then it comes to produce a soft purplish-white & arrowhead-shaped flower.

Artichokes do the same thing but in a much more flamboyant way. Here is what the artichoke looks like when it flowers.
