Prescription for Loopholes

As we touched on recently, Prohibition did not instill a complete alcohol black-out: not even legally. There were loopholes by which alcohol could be legally obtained through religious, mechanical, and medicinal means.

For some people their Congressionally-mandated dryness went over like a fireworks-ban on the 4th of July. One such Prohibition-era doctor wrote 1,880 gallons worth of alcohol prescriptions in a single month. That comes out to 7,534 ‘scripts for legal booze.
